thanks for ruling out the type of the machine and the attachment.

But as I said above I didn't see the same with centos7 guests.
To be sure I had then forced the  tray='open' for sata and ide cases but was 
not hitting the issue either.
Neither on qemu 4.2 nor on 5.2 reproduced this for me so I'm unsure how to help 
further.

So it seems it fails for you but the very same does not for me. 
I don't know what a good next step is at the moment, is this limited to a 
single (type of) machine and working on others for you?
