Binary package hint: xserver-xgl
This is a bug, that is pretty bad.....
After the upgrade (from 7.04 to 7.10), when I try to login, it leaves me
an orange screen.
No other sessions work except Failsafe Terminal and Failsafe GNOME in
gdm(login screen).
After logging in with the Failsafe GNOME session, I find this upgrade
message that tells me how to disable XGL.
This can be pretty weird for some beginners, which can have a bad
influence of Ubuntu.
Fortunately, I was able to create the file.
A detailed XGL output is:

My card is ATI Rage 128 (Xpert 128). This is a known card NOT to work on
Linux, because of driver locking problems.
Steps to reproduce:
Use a Xgl incompatible card.
Upgrade from 7.04 installed system to 7.10.
After you upgrade, reboot the system, and login.
You will see a orange screen (X background).
It will stay there. It probably will logout back to the login screen after a
while.

This type of bug will cause the beginners of Linux to think, is Linux
just like Vista, not working, or having hardware
problems/incompatibility???
The solution:
HAL is enabled in Ubuntu, right?
Use HAL to look for blacklisted cards, maybe by PCI ID or names, etc.
Generate a list of blacklisted cards.
If the user has a blacklisted card, offer a alternative(if possible), or
better, show a simple, no 3D desktop.
Then,
