Thanks for sending the smb.conf over.

And in particular, the "passdb backend" option creates a syntax error
because upstream has changed the syntax of this option in recent
versions. The Ubuntu samba packages are designed to automatically
handle this option for you on upgrade, but this doesn't help if your
smb.conf has been copied in from somewhere else after installing.
If you somehow have "opendirectorysam" support on your Ubuntu system
(which you didn't get from Ubuntu itself), you should drop the word
"guest" from the end of your "passdb backend" option. But since it's
unlikely that this backend name exists on your system, you probably want
to drop all of the above options from your Ubuntu smb.conf instead,
since they refer to features of the MacOS Samba.

I can't explain this, since the provided config should not work with any
version of Samba newer than 3.0.23b.
