Public bug reported: Jabref stopped working due to libawt_xawt.so not being found.
dpkg reports that openjdk-11-jre-headless does provide libawt_xawt.so in the listing (dpkg -L) but the library is not actually installed. Installing openjdk-11-jre (not headless) was needed to make jabref work. openjdk-11-jre not openjdk-11-jre-headless should be the jabref dependency.
