I had this problem a few weeks ago (21.04) & changed to x11. Additionally I found it sometimes affected nautilus file windows in the dock in the same way. The dock would show dots for windows that did not exist & then new windows could not be opened & reboot was needed. So its more than just a Thunderbird problem.
