I messed with the partition tables on one of the disks and then followed some steps to remove the failed one and recreated the new partition and added..all in older kernel..
Same thing happened for the other disk and after rebuilding again... effectively redoing the raid. Then, surprisingly ,booting the new kernel worked fine.
