Public bug reported:

Package: makedev

The makedev package in dapper installs and removes an init.d script, and
symlinks to it. The hardy version neither installs nor removes them.
This means that if you upgrade from dapper to hardy, the symlinks stay
on the system. Also, because the init.d file is a conffile, it also
stays (dpkg does not remove conffiles even if they're dropped from the
package).

It might be worthwhile to consider keeping the code to remove the rc.d
links, and adding code to remove the conffile.
