I think it may have something to do with enabling desktop effects (Compiz) (ATI X1400 card), it happened another time when the display manager is trying to determine if desktop effects can be enable but it quickly said they couldn't & fell back on the default graphics rendering. This may be an issue with trying to use desktop effects with a non-supported card, and not falling back on the default graphics after it tries to enable Compiz.
