Public bug reported:

SDCC 4.0.0 has a critical bug involved frame pointers. Compiling with
this version will more than likely cause critical errors on any embedded
application. Anyone installing from the default ubuntu repository would
have no way of knowing this.

The most recent release version is 4.1.0 and is about 4 months old. I
could build from source with no issue.
