Public bug reported:
I found different newer versions online (3.3.9 and 3.3.12. I added ppa's
and installed these newer versions to no avail.
When Gthumb 3.3.8 is started from the terminal it throws this error when trying
to resize a PNG file:

not create the surface: invalid value (typically too big) for the size of the
input (surface, pattern, etc.)
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

With version 3.3.12 it throws this error when trying to resize a jpg:
