I have seen this bug in several configurations, but they all boils down
to the same situation.
Apparently, presence of GRUB is recognized by the MBR of the boot hard
drive. If MBR is ok, but the GRUB is destroyed (for example, partition
was reformatted by external tool, or something went wrong during upgrade
— my most recent case), the installation process (or even Live CD boot)
ends up in computer frozen with multiple thin vertical colored lines on
monitor (apparently during X-Windows or Desktop initialization).
The reason I connect is with grub is that if I manually zero all bytes
of the MBR except for partition table and signature 55AA, everything
seems to work ok again. But the only contents there is GRUB boot
program.
