Apologies - the problem with my Pi 4B desktop reverting to X11 when I installed the kernel packages from https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~juergh/lp1946368/ was caused by a problem with my boot/root drive, which is an SSD in a USB 3 enclosure. For some reason it doesn't work quite right with UAS mode, having worked fine with spinning rust (hard disk) previously in UAS mode.
