Apologies - the problem with my Pi 4B desktop reverting to X11 when I
installed the kernel packages from
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~juergh/lp1946368/ was caused by a problem
with my boot/root drive, which is an SSD in a USB 3 enclosure. For some
reason it doesn't work quite right with UAS mode, having worked fine
with spinning rust (hard disk) previously in UAS mode.

Setting the relevant quirk to disable UAS mode before booting Ubuntu
21.10 on the Pi 4B fixes the problem, and once the kernel from
https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~juergh/lp1946368/ is installed the desktop
stops freezing 👍 and uses wayland 👍
