i would not relay on clicking sound to identify load unload cycles i made the 
same mistake,
if windows is not changing the apm value then then my guess is that ubuntu is 
simply accessing the hard drive too often
i do not have windows installed so i cant check it but try seeing if the load 
unload count is going up while using the computer if its actually going up we 
can assume that this is a issue with some process in ubuntu.

trying to figure out when the hard drive is being parked unparked is
impossible only by the sound of the laptop. my laptop still clicks
sometimes after i changed my apm but the load unload count is not going
up.
