If this is concluding that the BIOS is outdated and the cause--Grub should not 
be indicated as the package fault.

Given the age of report and no further updates by anyone--I tag this invalid.
Advice: Use version 7.10, Save what you need, proceed with fresh 
install--delete and format old "/" partition, ensure swap size, create "/" 
again on deleted "/" partition (size optional), make changes to disk. Grub 
stays stable--swap stays or grows--fresh install is always best choice.
