I had the same icon-does-not-appear-in-systray problem with the nextcloud desktop client on Ubuntu 20.04 (which upgraded from 18.04, which upgraded from 16.04 ... all the way to 10.04). The solution was comment #21, adding dbus-launch to the exec command.
