I've read in a mailing list that the problem might be related to the CPU

confirm it?

Does the problem also occur when you're not using any desktop effects
like disabling compiz?

If this doesn't change anything it's probably most likely that the error
has been caused by the GDM or are there any reports that the error also
occurs on KDE? There are two possibilites; The first one is to use the
kDM instead of the GDM (that's the login manager of KDE). And the second
one would be not to rely on using any login manager. Therefore we could
use rungetty which allows you to login directly.
