At first this seems to work fine in 22.04 (much newer version of
desktop-icons-ng), but then I could get it to fail if I dragged a group
by a folder in the top left of the group.

Please try the latest version by booting this from USB:

  http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

If the problem is still present then please report it to the developer
at:

  https://gitlab.com/rastersoft/desktop-icons-ng/-/issues

although it might be the same issue as:

  https://gitlab.com/rastersoft/desktop-icons-ng/-/issues/193
