I tried reproducing the error but was unable to after multiple tries,
which makes sense as you stated it was very rare. Have you seen this
happen multiple times, and is there any additional information you have
about the crash that may help to reproduce it?
Also we can try and debug the issue if you have a crash file available.
If a file exists in /var/crash/...smartmontools.../_.crash can you try
running:
sudo apport-collect 1966610
