I checked out the focal kernel and reverted the following commits. And
the problem went away, reverting just the 1st one wasn't enough to fix
the issue.
- NFSv4: nfs_atomic_open() can race when looking up a non-regular file
- NFSv4: Handle case where the lookup of a directory fails
