Public bug reported: Binary package hint: smartmontools
Hi, Ubuntu 7.04, server install. smartmontools 5.36-8ubuntu2. Installed a new 500G SATA Samsung disk. # smartctl -d ata /dev/sda smartctl version 5.36 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ Error SMART Status command failed Please get assistance from http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ Register values returned from SMART Status command are: CMD=0x50 FR =0x00 NS =0x00 SC =0x46 CL =0x98 CH =0xdf SEL=0x00 A mandatory SMART command failed: exiting. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options. The -a option seems more informative: # smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sda smartctl version 5.36 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: SAMSUNG HD501LJ Serial Number: S0MUJDWPB16870 Firmware Version: CR100-12 User Capacity: 500,107,862,016 bytes Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: 8 ATA Standard is: Not recognized. To continue, add one or more '-T permissive' options. Looks like the minor version number is the problem. The -F samsung and -F samsung2 options does not change anything. -T permissive makes it work. s# smartctl -a -d ata -T permissive /dev/sda smartctl version 5.36 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: SAMSUNG HD501LJ Serial Number: S0MUJDWPB16870 Firmware Version: CR100-12 User Capacity: 500,107,862,016 bytes Device is: In smartctl database [for details use: -P show] ATA Version is: 8 ATA Standard is: Not recognized.
