Sorry, the subject line is quite confusing. It's a hardware specific issue, so "always" refers to this hardware configuration. It worked well on my previous machine as well. By the way, the system I've had these troubles with is a Shuttle SN25P. They build their own mainboards so maybe this is some information lspci can't provide.
I switched to Debian stable now as I didn't manage to get Ubuntu running.
