I have the same problem. As I understand kio_media_mounthelper should first look in fstab to see if it can mount a device with the normal mount method. If it fails it should use hald to mount instead.
It looks like kio_media_mounthelper can't mount devices which have an UUID entry in fstab, while those devices can be mounted with the "mount"-command. If I change UUID to /dev/disk/by-uuid-xxx kio_media_mounthelper finds the entry.
