This bug can be fixed in Gutsy by adding the following lines to
/etc/modprobe.conf (which is then moved to /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf
)

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-card-0 index=0
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=vaio

Headphones now play sound and turn off the internal speakers.

However, the internal microphone still does not work -

See the attached screenshot  - the "switches" tab is new since this edit
to modprobe.conf (however it is still not the same as this screenshot

ALSA version 1.0.15 as per linux-backports-modules
