The proposed workaround works, but I use full disk encryption and the
unlock screen doesn't show up anymore.  As a workaround, after switching
on the computer, I wait a few seconds, blindly type the password and the
system boots successfully.

Any ideas on how to restore the disk encryption unlock screen?
