I don't think this is the case, on my amd64 system, the layout is:
$ ls -l /usr
[..]
drwxr-xr-x 240 root root 102400 2008-01-04 09:50 lib
drwxr-xr-x 31 root root 20480 2008-01-04 09:50 lib32
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2007-01-08 19:04 lib64 -> lib
[..]
The same is true for my Xorg.0.log. Could you please attach your
Xorg.0.log file? Did you use a self-installed (or envy installed) nvidia
driver maybe?
