For what it's worth for this slightly older thread, I had the same problems on Fedora Core 8 with Amarok 1.4.7 and mt-daapd r1586 on Kubuntu 7.10. What the problem turned out to be, was Privoxy (running on the same computer as Amarok). After turning off all proxies in the Control Center, it suddenly worked as it should.
