Public bug reported:
I've enabled Compiz on my Toshiba Satellite L40-10Q with an on-board
Intel GMA950 chip. The machine has worked fine for quite a long time,
but after deciding I'd set emerald as my window decorator, re-order my
Gnome panels (to the default layout, mind) and install the murrine
engine from the repos (gtk2-engine-murrina), I get gdm freezes whenever
I login with this user. I get the outline of my panels, as well as the
location of my background. I can open the launch application dialogue
with ALT+F2, but it takes a while, and when I do so, the GTK elements of
the window don't show up. Just like with the panels. The panels are
white on a black background, despite me actually having set a blue
background image.
If I kill my dialogue by pressing the X in the top-right corner, it
fades away, just as it would on Compiz.
I have attempted to remove emerald and compiz---in the hopes that GNOME
would instead revert to metacity, but with no luck (I now get a
different window border, however...)
It doesn't work to login to GNOME failsafe, either.
