Thanks for updating this bug report. I will try Hardy alpha3 when it
comes out.

In the meantime I have upgraded to Gutsy and while I don't know whether
there is a difference in the Wacom drivers between the original Gutsy
Live CD, which I tried before, and the latest patches as it seems to put
the Wacom mouse into relative mode about 95% percent of the time while
the stylus still works in absolute mode as it should. I say "95%
percent" because occasionally, when picking up the mouse and
repositioning on the tablet, the screen cursor jumps as if it
momentarily went into absolute mode.

In any case, a more pressing problem for me under Gutsy with the Wacom
mouse now is that the mouse wheel is inverted and while this is a common
problem, none of the solutions I have found here and elsewhere work. The
command `sudo xsetwacom set cursor RelWUp 5` gives the following error:

X Error: 8 BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Error (22): WacomConfigSetRawParam: failed
Set: Failed to set cursor value for 'RelWUp'

And while these commands do not error, they have no effect:
sudo xsetwacom set cursor Button4 5
sudo xsetwacom set cursor Button5 4

The command `xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 5 4"` also fails with the following
error:
Warning: Only changing the first 5 of 11 buttons.
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 116 (X_SetPointerMapping)
  Value in failed request: 0x5
Serial number of failed request: 9
Current serial number in output stream: 9

So I'm back to using my USB mouse for the moment...
