Thanks for the bug report. I'm guessing the first line is causing the
second line:

Jul 23 10:48:35 lew-XPS-13-7390 systemd[1]: gdm.service: Control process
exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
which presumably is referring to /usr/share/gdm/generate-config where -d
is used. So it sounds like maybe your machine has a different 'install'
command in the path.
What do you get if you run these commands?
which install
install --version
** Changed in: gdm3 (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Incomplete
