Public bug reported:

Running Xubuntu 24.04, and wanting GNOME Software Center for ease of
use, I noticed it was light, while the rest of the desktop was dark.

Some investigation later showed that Xubuntu is missing a configuration
file for xdg-desktop-portal that makes it use the xdg-desktop-portal-gtk
backend. This file was added to upstream xfce4-session in 4.18.4:
https://gitlab.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-session/-/merge_requests/47

(The cause seems to be that libadwaita's fallback to gsettings doesn't
occur once it's started trying xdg-desktop-portal.)

It would be useful to backport this file, or upgrade to 4.18.4, for
better interoperability with libadwaita-based programs.

See also the resolved https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1050802 for context from @smcv who works on xdg-
desktop-portal.
