Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Gnome Desktop
(even in a "try Ubuntu" live boot after "sudo apt install geeqie")

When geeqie is opened, a "gear" icon appears on the dock instead of the
proper icon. Right clicking on the gear icon doesn't give a "pin to
dash" option.
The proper geeqie icon is displayed when searching activities and under
"Show Apps", and you can pin it to the dock with a right click, but
clicking on the pinned icon still brings up a separate gear icon.
I've found two workarounds:
1. Rename file org.geeqie.Geeqie.desktop in /usr/share/applications to
geeqie.desktop or Geeqie.desktop
2. In file org.geeqie.Geeqie.desktop uncomment #StartupWMClass=geeqie
