I don't have .desktop files, in Ubuntu 22.04 icons were shown without it. Yeah, it probably worked before because I was running a session in Xorg. Not sure why this has changed since the update. I'll check the Xorg session on next relogin (on next week).
I'm not sure, however, that I'm not on the Xorg already.
