I have had the same problem, both under Gnome and KDE. What's interesting was: I used Gusty Gibbon 7.10 tribe 5 before the official release came out. Gnumeric worked perfectly then and after an automatic upgrade (which might not have involved Gnumeric at all?). But recently, I did a fresh install and this chart problem appeared. The Gnumeric version in 7.10 seems too high. I looked at the Gnumeric site and found that it's a dev version that requires packages newer than what Ubuntu 7.10 has to offer. I tried to reinstall Gnumeric a couple of times without any luck. Finally, I pulled out Gnumeric 1.4.4 source code and got that going. So I'm using Gnumeric 1.4.4 now :(
