Newer Linux kernels have become pedantic about bandwidth requirements so display cables that worked in older versions of Ubuntu may not work now. It would be very hard to prove that's a software bug so I usually just recommend buying a higher grade cable, and don't connect it through a dock at least while you're testing the cable.
