Xorg does not just hog CPU while firefox is rendering a page (this would
be understandable), but even when firefox is quietly waiting for data,
for example if the wireless connection has dropped out, firefox is
sitting using about 5% CPU waiting for data, but Xorg is eating 40% -
why?

At least with the new version, firefox itself doesn't hog so much CPU
time while waiting for data from the network interface.
