well if what you say is true then thats a whole different ball game.
still i find it hard to believe . make no mistake no one will be happier
then me to see a big fat headline on slashdot that windows is also
destroying people hard drive . i cant read Italian so tell me did they
check for load/unload cycle count  with smartct ? we already established
that noise alone is not an indication.also no one said that on ac power
the problem goes away (unless you apply the ugly fix).it is possible
that this happens on windows and also on linux but maybe im missing
something but i dont think it can happen only on windows.you say you
tested with hdparm or do you mean smartctl and if not what is it exactly
you tested?. if more people with dual boot can test properly we could
get to the bottom of this.

to Matthias Dietrich: is your computer a OEM install? (maybe the
manufacturer made some kind of tweak) did you use smartctl?
