Adding my final comments to make sure they aren't missed. I then converted the pdf to pcl using:
gs -sDEVICE=ijs -sIjsServer=hpijs -dIjsUseOutputFD -sDeviceManufacturer ="HEWLETT-PACKARD" -sDeviceModel="Deskjet 6500" -dDEVICEWIDTHPOINTS=612 -dDEVICEHEIGHTPOINTS=792 -sIjsParams=Quality:Quality=0,Quality:ColorMode=2,Quality:MediaType=0,Quality:PenSet=2 -r600 -dNOPAUSE -dSAFER -sOutputFile="`basename $1 '.ps'`.pcl" $1 -c quit and using lpr -o raw -PPhotosmart_3300 Annual_rev.pdf.pcl I was able to print the document, so perhaps something is wrong with the foomatic to pdf? I'm guessing. I don't believe this is a problem with hplip--although I could be wrong. But hopefully this helps someone! I've also attached the pcl version of the pdf file.
