Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-driver-vesa

I have a Dell Inspiron e1505 with a ATI x1400 graphics card. I tried to
load 8.04 Alpha 2 in live cd mode, it did not load, it said there was an
error starting the xserver. Here is the information I got back by
looking at the error after the xserver failed:

/etc/gdm/failsafeXServer: line 47: [: too many arguments Warning: Could
not retrieve EDID because get-edid is not installed (1): error: this
program does not know how to configure the "10 shared/default-x-server
doesn't exist" X server Warning: Could not generate
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe for vesa driver

** Affects: xserver-xorg-driver-vesa (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
