OK. I still can't find an easy explanation for the black screen. One
issue that might be related is the kernel complaining that:

  kernel: EDID block 0 is all zeroes

This means there is a problem in the monitor's display cable or the
monitor has buggy firmware. It *might* cause a black screen or it might
not. Because it only prevents the monitor from reporting what modes it
supports. Without that information you should still have access to basic
standard display modes.

Something worth trying is to add this to /etc/environment:

  MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_KMS_MODE=simple

and then reboot.
