I upgraded normally from Ubuntu MATE 22.04.5 to Ubuntu MATE 24.04.1 via "Software Updater". After upgrading, the OS would randomly cause a black screen, which would usually return after several seconds. Once or twice it did not return, and I had to cold-reset the computer. It apparently has to do with the new Linux kernel: UM 22.04.5 used Linux 5.15.0-125-generic #135-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 27 13:53:58 UTC 2024 x86_64 UM 24.04.1 used Linux 6.8.0-48-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Fri Sep 27 14:04:52 UTC 2024 x86_64 The Ubuntu boot screen gave me the option of using the old kernel (5.15) instead of the new kernel (6.8). When I chose the old kernel, the OS booted and ran successfully.
