The too bright display is fixed with the new ati driver, but the new driver does not recognize correct EDID, that is right CORRECT EDID output from my old LCD monitor and I suspect that is GUI resolution and font sizes are too large especially on KDM login and KDE. I can manually fix this on my Debian partition but the Debian xorg.conf does not work on Gusty.
I will forward you my Debian bug report which for some strange reason has not been acknowledged yet.
