Update: I've restored from backup back to Kubuntu 24.04. There are so many issues for me with 24.10 that I simply had to revert back to 24.04. Apart from the performance issues, I'm seeing problems with crashes when entering suspend and hibernation, quite a few other bugs in KDE, and some important software still isn't really compatible with Wayland.
One last thing: I might preserve the 24.10 system on the SSD if anybody stills wants to dig into this. I've also included a screenshot from KDE's system monitor where you can see what happens when I'm hovering over the Firefox app icon in the task bar and the window previews are being displayed. The system starts working profusely just displaying those previews. This can be repeated again and again with the same result. This is what I mean by "it feels like the system is running circles around itself". This isn't present in 24.04.
