Bisecting looks like it'll take more time than I have available at the moment. However, I was recently offered a new version through apt: 6.11.0-12-generic. I installed and rebooted into it, but this one also still exhibits the same problem. I looked at dmesg but could not identify anything useful, although I'll give it another, more focused, try later.
