What I should have mentioned though is that this problem only occurred
when I tried to install on a disk that already had partitions on it
(including linux partitions of various kinds that I did not want to
delete). I had no trouble installing a root partition and swap on an
empty disk on another box recently using the same installer. I was able
both to choose reiserfs as the file system and to specify the amount of
swap space I wanted.
