Oh no, that sounds frustrating! Dependency issues like this can be tricky 
during upgrades. Have you tried using apt-get commands to fix broken packages? 
Something like:
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get remove libsmbclient:i386
sudo apt-get upgrade
Removing conflicting 32-bit libraries and then upgrading usually helps. Let me
