On 22.04.5, using the default sort works if you specify the word list
with -a, so the sorting doesn't seem to be the sole issue:

ls -al /etc/dictionaries-common/words
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 37 Dec 26 12:08 /etc/dictionaries-common/words -> 
/usr/share/dict/american-english-huge

look access  (returns nothing)
look access -a /etc/dictionaries-common/words

access
accessaries
accessary
accessary's
accessed
accesses
accessibilities
accessibility
accessibility's
accessible
.....
