Same issue for me since several Ubuntu versions on 2 different computers
(24.10 and 24.04)

And same : if I empty the /home/jpaul/.cache/thumbnails/fail/gnome-
thumbnail-factory/ AND open a Nautilus window of the desktop, the right
icons is created immediately.

After #9, the problem seems to be when we save the file on the Desktop folder, 
any pdf, Libreoffice, jpg… files.
To get it : go to Internet, find a .jpg file and save it :
* 1 : in the Desktop folder : the thumbnail doesn't appear either in Nautilus 
or on the Desktop view but a black thumbnail with only one pixel appears in 
/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory/ (attached file)
* 2 : in another folder : the thumbnail is well created

** Attachment added: "bad thumbnail"
