Ok, the important part is the route -n, for network manager, it routes
the vpn's subnet correctly, for vpnc it does not (for some reason).

I checked how vpnc is added to system menu and I am confused, how can
you run it as root, do you run it in console? When I launch it through
menu, it asks me for my sudo password. The command should be su-to-root
-X -c /usr/bin/kvpnc.

Also, there is a major new version of kvpnc that fixes many issues, you
might try it and see if this works now (there are packages from the
author, they arenot official from ubuntu, but they should be safe)

for gutsy, depending on what you use.
