This bug still exists now in 2008 with the latest version (7.10).

I tried to install on a partition where I already had version 4.10
working. I didn't realize I now needed 4 GB of space. The install seemed
to go fine--no error messages. But when I tried to reboot, GRUB failed.
It took me a long time to realize that the install had used up the whole
partition and hadn't finished--so in particular it didn't install GRUB
properly.

Obviously someone with more experience would have figured out what was
wrong more quickly, but we want Ubuntu to be easy to use even for
newcomers.
