for anyone trying to use dbus-launch in ~/.xinitrc i found the following
worked for me:
. /etc/X11/Xsession
dbus-update-activation-environment --systemd DISPLAY
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS XAUTHORITY
exec dbus-launch i3
